<p>I got some of these Arlec Smart Plug In Sockets from Bunnings. Apparently they are Tuya devices but I decided to take the brute force approach to putting ESPHome on the.</p>

<p>First challenge was getting the tri point screw out. I had to buy a special screwdriver for this.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0770-768x1024.jpg" alt="tri point screw in arlect smart plug" class="wp-image-1552" width="227" height="302" srcset="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0770-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0770-225x300.jpg 225w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0770-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0770.jpg 1155w" sizes="(max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px" /><figcaption>They don&#8217;t really want you opening these</figcaption></figure>

<p>Once I got the screws out, it was easy to unclip the case and open it.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-768x1024.jpg" alt="Arlec Smart Plug In Socket Circuit Board Underside View" data-id="1550" data-link="https://emacstragic.net/img_0774/" class="wp-image-1550" srcset="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-225x300.jpg 225w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-1568x2091.jpg 1568w, https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0774-e1563837914954-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Arlec Smart Plug In Socket Circuit Board Underside View</figcaption></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" src="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0777-1024x768.jpg" alt="Arlec Smart Plug In Socket Circuit Board Topside View" data-id="1549" data-link="https://emacstragic.net/img_0777/" class="wp-image-1549"/><figcaption>Arlec Smart Plug In Socket Circuit Board Topside View</figcaption></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" src="https://emacstragic.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/img_0776-1024x768.jpg" alt="TYWE2S esp8266 module" data-id="1547" data-link="https://emacstragic.net/img_0776/" class="wp-image-1547"/></figure></li></ul>

<p>After tracing the circuit, I decided to solder wires to the board and connect them to my USB-&gt;Serial adapter. The only tricky part was that you have to hold GPIO0 at ground when you power up the esp8266 to get it into flash mode. I just held a wire on the tiny GPIO0 pad on the TYWE2S.</p>
